About Kritters 4 Kids

The vision of Kritters 4 Kids became a reality in the spring of 2003 after a generous grant from the Ed Rachal Foundation to develop our first curriculum. Kritters 4 Kids, combines our beautiful Wildlife in Focus Photography books with a specially designed science curriculum guide to educate school children across South Texas. The professionally designed curriculum takes a unique and important look at the mutual dependence and interrelationship of all creatures, great and small, in the Coastal Bend area. Through our science program, we explore and enlighten our youth about the diversity of South Texas wildlife and habitat and the importance of conserving and protecting wildlife and habitat for generations to come. This unique program educates our children, many of whom have seldom been to the Corpus Christi Bay, by showing them the vastness and variety of wildlife and habitat in the Coastal Bend that are being threatened by urbanization.

Our goal is to plant seeds of appreciation and passion for a new generation of naturalists, biologists, and nature lovers to protect and preserve our Coastal Bend.

Students go "WILD" at Kritters 4 Kids book donation at the Student & Learning Guidance Center thanks to their sponsor, The Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program.

How Kritters 4 Kids Works!

Kritters 4 Kids provides a set of 25 books for use by a classroom in each participating elementary and middle school in our 14 county service area. K4K meets the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Guidelines (TEKS) and is developed by a teacher, for teachers. The program is taught by the science or biology teacher in grade levels K-5 and Grades 6-8 using two separate curriculum guides.

We measure success. Students will be pre-tested on basic land and wildlife concepts before they begin the modules. Once the lessons are complete, the students are tested again to determine how effective the modules were. Teachers are also evaluated. At mid-semester The Coastal Bend Wildlife Habitat Education Program will check in with each teacher to assess where they are with the program and what they might need. The second evaluation will be in the form of a questionnaire to determine what strengths and weaknesses they discovered and how we can improve.

Over the past two years, we have successfully received funding to provide Kritters 4 Kids in 89 schools across the Coastal Bend with the help of the community. Kritters 4 Kids is underwritten by conscientious charitable organizations, who find value in educating school children about preserving our environment and protecting our animals and plant life.

Nearly 50 other school districts still await sponsorship for our Kritters for Kids program. We ask your help in spreading this valuable learning experience.
