A Tribute to Luther Young & John West for their Outstanding Contributions
LUTHER YOUNG was an unusual combination of bravado and tenderness, compassion and confidence. He was incapable of embarrassment. Luther could be almost spiritual one moment then sarcastically biting the next. Tio Kleberg said Luther was a consummate organizer with a can-do resolve that allowed him to negotiate roadblocks like a bull or tiptoe around them like a deer. He preferred playing the bull, but always with a grin. Luther volunteered his pig cooking skills, kennel trucks and hunting dogs for many worthwhile charities and donated hunts to myriad conservation causes. The Boy Scouts counted on him heavily. Wounded Warriors benefited from his generosity. HALO-Flight will forever be in his debt. But Luther never took himself too seriously. His engaging personality gained him the affection of the outdoors community while his generosity earned him the respect of many.
JOHN WEST is an attorney, adventure traveler and accomplished photographer. He also is a good-humored curmudgeon. John loves kids and kids love him. His
favorite project is the Kritters 4 Kids program. In fact, he came up with the name. John always considered education the most important component of the contest.
But at the same time he became a huge supporter of our other conservation goals. He was an invaluable mentor to ranchers taking the plunge into photography as part of their business plans. His guidance within the Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo Contest was focused and decisive. When we tried to complicate the contest with more rules he stood firm in favor of keeping things simple. Johnís dedication to the contest and to conservation is indisputable. John stands out as special where special is the norm.
